12th Brač Film Festival Brings the Best of Regional Cinema and Film Star Appearances
From August 6 to 9, Supetar will once again become a place where audiences and filmmakers meet. The twelfth edition of Brač Film Festival brings a programme that gathers some of the most acclaimed regional films of the year, appearances by actors and directors, screenings for children and young audiences, and a selection of short student films by emerging filmmakers from across the region.
The festival opens on August 6 with the Bosnian-Herzegovinian comedy The Pavilion, a film that opened the Sarajevo Film Festival and won numerous audience awards. At the heart of the story are residents of a retirement home who decide to take matters into their own hands — the film will be presented in Supetar by acting legends Mirjana Karanović and Zijah Sokolović.
The second festival day brings Honey Bunny, an emotionally rich island comedy-drama by director Igor Jelinović about two sisters in conflict over family property. The film will be introduced by director Igor Jelinović and actress Snježana Sinovčić Šiškov, and also marks the final screen role of the celebrated Split actress Dara Vukić.
On the third evening comes Yugo Florida, one of the most awarded regional dramas of recent months. The film received a standing ovation at the Sarajevo Film Festival and won the Heart of Sarajevo for Best Male Performance for Andrija Kuzmanović. It tells a moving story of a son who, after years of silence, must care for his gravely ill father. Following Sarajevo, Skopje, and numerous sold-out screenings, the film arrives before Brač audiences.
The festival closes with the action sci-fi adventure Storm Rider: Legend of Hammerhead, a Hollywood-Croatian co-production partially filmed on the island of Brač itself. The film, starring Goran Bogdan, Sergej Trifunović, and a host of domestic and international cast members, arrives at the Ljetno kino screen in Supetar after playing in over 300 American cinemas.
Young audiences once again hold a special place in the programme. As part of the My First Trip to the Cinema initiative, the festival presents a sensory-friendly screening for the youngest audiences, alongside a selection of films for children and young viewers. These include the feature-length animated film Crystal Planet by director Arsen Anton Ostojić, the youth film Otter, and the children's film Elvis Škorc, all screening in the daytime programme throughout the festival.
A dedicated portion of the programme is reserved for short student films by young filmmakers from the region, produced at film academies in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia, and Serbia. Audiences will have the opportunity to see As If I'm Not There by director Milica Vujasin, Three Lives by directing duo Stefan Košević and Laura Vuksan, Waiting for the Train by director Armin Čulić, and Topia by director Andrija Čurović. The programme offers a cross-section of a new generation of regional filmmakers whose work is already travelling festivals successfully and represents the future of cinema in this part of Europe.
Alongside screenings, the festival programme includes conversations with filmmakers and guests, offering audiences a first-hand encounter with the people behind the films that are defining contemporary regional cinema.
Tickets for evening screenings are available through Entrio.
